The June 20th is celebrated every year World Refugee Day which, established by the United Nations General Assembly and celebrated for the first time in 2001, aims to commemorate the approval in 1951 of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. An important opportunity to raise public awareness of the often desperate condition of refugees. In Agrigento, some local entities have organized a two-day event, the next 20 and 21 June.
On the 20th, at the Pasolini cultural center, in via Atenea, from 9am, a conference on the theme “A journey of a thousand paths”; at 6pm, football tournament at the “Pinetina” sports center.
On June 21st, from 5pm, entertainment for children at Sai in Agrigento, in via Fosse Ardeatine.

The boats of death have become a reality that concerns us more and more closely, with thousands of migrants who come by sea especially from Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, Pakistan, Eritrea, Nigeria, Gambia. In addition to these, we must not forget the very serious situation of refugees that remain in Syria, Somalia, Iraq And South Sudan or who – in the case of Syria – move to neighboring countries such as Lebanon, Türkiye And Jordan.
And there are also other areas of the world, even more remote and forgotten, where thousands of people live in conditions of refugees: for example the Kachinnorthern state of Myanmar on the border with China, where one has been underway for years civil warin the total silence of the international community.
