“I tiptoe away. They were intense years, we were at the center of the world due to the phenomenon of immigration, we dealt with murders, we were on the streets in the rain, we were in a neighborhood that was blown up and we witnessed a system of power that is skipped.”

With these words which contain only some of the most important facts of the twelve years spent in Agrigento, on his last day as deputy prosecutor, Salvatore Vella addressed an affectionate greeting to the press.

He leaves the offices of the Prosecutor’s Office of the city of Temples, on the fifth floor of the Palace of Justice in via Mazzini, to take office on July 2nd in Gela after his promotion to chief prosecutor. “I would never have thought of leaving Agrigento as public prosecutor – he commented – and this represents a great satisfaction for me”. And in these years – first as a substitute, then as an assistant and then leading the office as an acting deputy – there has certainly been no shortage of work.

He wanted to dedicate a particular thought precisely to Lampedusa: «”Only those who have been to that island and have seen the suffering in the eyes of the people ‘guilty’ of being born on the wrong side of the sea can understand the strong emotions that this land leaves in the soul”.
