1000 km of solidarity and dedication

The initiative started in Milan on 15 June, the date of the foundation of the Italian Red Cross, and will end in Solferino on 22 June, on the occasion of the traditional celebratory torchlight procession. Today’s stage touched the offices of Busto Arsizio, Gallarate and Varese. The authorities of the three cities participated in the event, paying homage to the volunteers who embody the values ​​of the humanitarian organization every day.

The stages of the journey
The route of the cycling relay will cross three regions – Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto – symbolically uniting 21 historic Committees of the Italian Red Cross. Among the cities touched are, in addition to those already mentioned, Solferino, Bergamo, Brescia, Castiglione delle Stiviere, Como, Crema, Cremona, Ferrara, Mantua, Monza, Lecco, Lodi, Padua, Pavia, Reggio Emilia, Sondrio, and Verona .

A Tribute to Fundamental Principles
Each stage of the journey is dedicated to one of the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Volunteerism, Unity and Universality. This symbolic journey not only crosses the history of the Red Cross, but enhances the values ​​that constitute its beating heart.

The Structure of the Relay
The route develops along two different routes for a duration of seven stages, culminating in a final common stage from Brescia to Solferino. This final stretch will see the joint participation of the cycling caravan and the volunteers of the Italian Red Cross in a symbolic embrace of solidarity. Closing the day will be the course organized by the “CRI in bici” group, which represents a further moment of sharing and growth for the participants.
