The San Lorenzo hospital in Carmagnola
The Complex Urology Structure directed by Prof. Gaetano Marino since 2007 it has worked in the three principals of Carmagnola, Moncalieri and Chieri focusing in particular on endourological procedures a Carmagnola.
The structure of the ASL TO5, which responds to the needs of the population of the territory and also of the south of the Turin metropolitan area, carries out a total of over a thousand interventions a year in the three hospitals maintaining the outpatient center of gravity at Carmagnolawhere the urostomy center is located, where the outpatient endoscopy with minimally invasive instruments is located and in particular the uroncology center where the chemo-immunotherapy intravesical instillations are carried out.
The Carmagnola operating block is also equipped with two laser systems for the treatment of urinary stones and bladder tumors and has recently improved the efficiency and clinical effectiveness for these procedures while maintaining minivasivity.
Over the years, urological procedures have improved and become more effective thanks above all to three main factors: the acquisition of new technologies, the reduction of clinical hospital stays and the hiring of capable and highly motivated young people.
“The company has focused a lot on us” – says the director Marine – “Having provided Carmagnola with the dedicated instrument for prostate biopsies with the FUSION technique in 2023 has made it possible to carry out an increasingly early and minimally invasive diagnosis of prostate cancer”.
In Carmagnola, the Urinary Calculosis center was also strengthened by acquiring dedicated instruments to be able to carry out complex minimally invasive surgical procedures such as those dedicated to carrying out Percutaneous Renal Surgery (MINIPERC) which consists of complete lithotritis of large volume kidney stones incarcerated in the urinary tract not otherwise reachable via the urethra. “They are patients that we once sent to other hospitals” – reports director Marino – “While today we are able to carry them out in our company and the Carmagnola unit is increasingly becoming the company’s center of gravity for these interventions”.
Thanks to these procedures it was also possible to reduce hospital stays, allowing a greater number of patients to be followed.
The most important factor for the functioning of the department remains people.
“The presence of young urologists eager to grow and motivated to work was the winning move” – reports the director – “Working on three devices requires maximum attention, interdisciplinary integration and continuous updating in increasingly complex and minimally invasive procedures. For two years now I have been working to bring all my collaborators to the highest levels. I therefore thank Dr. Francesco Marson, responsible for endo-laparoscopy procedures assisted by Dr. Giovanna Berta, Dr. Gabriel Niculescu, Dr. Stefano Piscitello, Dr. Angelo Giordano. I also thank Dr. Andrea Cavallini and Dr. Dorino Piras and his young colleagues, Dr. Angela Sicca, Dr. Giorgio Guarnotta and Dr. Ferdinando Cavacece, the anesthesiologists, radiology technicians, nurses, OSS nursing coordinators of the operating block and the surgical hospitalization area of Carmagnola for allowing me to grow the Urology department that I have been directing for years”
