Calabria in Fabula, describing places through theatre

The second edition of. arrives in Corigliano-Rossano Calabria in Fabulathe traveling theater project signed by Theater in Notes with the artistic direction of True Secrets which for its second stage – Thursday 20th and Friday 21st June – will see two great names from the contemporary theater scene on stage: Ulderico Pesce, in a story that has its roots in the ancient city of Rossano, and Saverio La Ruina with his latest work winning the 2023 Ubu Prize as best new Italian text.

“Calabria in Fabula is a project strongly linked to the places it passes through – explained the artistic director True Secretsnot only because it arises from the need to bring communities back to the squares and historic places of the villages, but also because it aims to tell these places through the magic of theatre. The shows that we will see on stage in Corigliano-Rossano have Calabria and its cities as protagonists, and reflect precisely on what it means to cross a place, a path, the street of a village, and then open up to themes that range from respect towards nature, to the values ​​of solidarity and charity, up to politics, love, the relationship with fathers and the very sense of time”.

From the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Ionian Sea, from the Coast of the Gods to that of the Achaeans: the “Calabria in Fabula” journey continues through some of the most beautiful and fascinating places in the five Calabrian provinces, among beaches with crystal clear waters, landscapes surrounded by the scent of citrus fruits, historic fortresses and castles. A journey through the toe of the boot represented by the graphic project conceived and created by the visual designer Angelo Gallo.

A project carried out with the organizational direction of Pier Luigi Sposato and in partnership with Vertical Scene And ActorInCorsoco-financed by the PSC Development and Cohesion Plan 6.02.02 provided as a result of the “Special Projects for the development of theatrical activity” notice of the Calabria Region – Department of Education, Training and Equal Opportunities – Culture Sector, 2nd year.

To open the two-day program, the June 20th at 4.00 pm in the Sala G. Sapia of the Cloister of San Bernardino, there will be a theater masterclass, curated by the director and actress True Secrets, which for the second stage will also see the participation of Ulderico Pesce, actor, playwright and director who in his works deals with important themes strongly linked to his homeland, Basilicata, and to Southern Italy in general.

An important training opportunity, designed to support new talents and small cultural entities operating in the area by offering them the opportunity to interact with great professionals in the sector. At 9.00 pm in the Cloister of San Bernardino “The path of San Nilo” will be staged, by and with Ulderico Pesce and produced by Mediterranean Center of the Arts.

A show that tells of the landscapes and nature that San Nilo – a Basilian monk, hermit, abbot and scribe born in Rossano in 910 – contemplated while crossing Italy on foot. A work on the importance of walking in close contact with nature and contemplation, but above all on the values ​​of solidarity, compassion and charity, which tells the story of a Calabria which was the cultural center not only of Southern Italy but of entire Mediterranean.

The second day will open with the press conference which will be held at 6.00 pm in the G. Sapia room, while at 9.00 pm appointment at the Cloister of San Bernardino with “Via del Popolo” by and with Saverio La Ruina and produced by Vertical Scene. It is the story of belonging to a place, to a family, to a community.

Via del Popolo, a stretch of road in a southern town that was once teeming with activity: two hundred meters which also represent a training path in which the foundations of future life are laid, from which emerge a poignant humanity, the relationship with fathers, the ‘initiation to life, to politics, to love. And not only that, “Via del Popolo” is also a reflection on time, the time that passes but which we must not chase, but rather spend. At the end of the two shows, the actors will meet the audience for a moment of discussion
