homophobic attack in Piazza Mercato

The situation in the streets of Foggia nightlife, in particular in Piazza Mercato, continues to worsen. Residents, traders and visitors have been denouncing for years the state of total anarchy that reigns in this meeting area.

The latest serious episode occurred on Saturday evening. After midnight, a group of about ten boys, probably also minors, were wandering around the square looking for someone to molest. Their attention turned to a boy, whose “fault” seemed to be his homosexuality. Without any warning, one of the group members slapped him across the face.

Instinctively, the boy threw the contents of his drink at the group, triggering a violent reaction. The group went back and one of them punched the boy’s friend in the throat. Not happy, they started insulting the boy and his black friend with homophobic and racist epithets.

Only the intervention of the police calmed things down. Shortly after, an ambulance arrived to help a person injured during the chaos. The person hit in the throat was taken to hospital, while the boy initially attacked filed a complaint at the police station the following morning. Now it is up to the Police to trace the perpetrators of this deplorable attack, also using the footage from the video surveillance cameras present in the area. In the past, these security systems have already made it possible to identify and arrest those responsible for other serious incidents.
