What opens is a decisive week for the city of Avellino. On Sunday, in fact, the polls will open for the run-off in the only Campania capital to vote and which will decide who among the candidates from the broad field Antonio Gengaro and the former deputy mayor Laura Nargi he will wear the tricolor sash for the next 5 years. And the two aspiring mayors, separated by a gap of just over 4 percentage points (36.89% Gengaro and 32.49% Nargi) are engaged in the final and frenetic electoral events in view of the run-off scheduled for 23 and 24 June. And for Gengaro today was an intense day, which began with the visit of the governor of Campanito Vincenzo De Luca at the Avellino Air station and ended with the arrival this evening in the heart of the Irpinian capital of the national secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein.
A real crowd welcomed the Dem secretary escorted by the provincial and regional representatives of the Democratic Party to the stage to support Gengaro in his speech to the citizens. «We are not haters, we have ideas and proposals. In this city there was one of the greatest mayors of the republican tradition, Tonino Di Nunno: we belong to this school. We will not rig competitions, tenders and the August holiday.” Then he focuses on his opponents. «Genovese has closed the agreement with Nargi. We have not opened the cow market, we are not going to the seaside, but to vote one by one. We don’t use the Democratic Party to fix some friends.” The right-wing deputy Gianfranco Rotondi also ends up in the crosshairs. «He was ashamed of giving credit to the outgoing administration or to the Right. We sent him into exile in 1996, when we chose Maccanico as an exponent of the basic Left of the DC. We are the heirs of that political tradition, we will never go to the right.” The centre-left candidate does not give up on agreements in view of the run-off: «With the noble Right (the reference is to Modestino Iandoli, mayoral candidate of the Brothers of Italy) we can dialogue because we have in common the cult of the city’s memory. We will never do it with the others.”
Then the national secretary of the Democratic Party took the floor, which touches on the themes that are characterizing his tour in particular in the South: defense of healthcare and public schools, work and fight for the weakest: «This Right is against healthcare because it claims – states Schlein – that treatment is a personal responsibility, we instead want it to be collective responsibility. According to the Government, only those with fat wallets have the right to treatment.” Then: «We are for public schools which are a lever for social emancipation». And tomorrow, announces the secretary of the Democratic Party, «we will be in the square in Rome with all the oppositions to demonstrate against the premiership and differentiated autonomy: which further divide the country. Demonstrating with us – says Schlein – means defending the Constitution and national unity. The fight is for work. Which is the priority of the internal areas which are emptying due to the lack of opportunities for young people. With differentiated autonomy this condition can only worsen. The battle is for the South, because – she concludes – without redemption of the South there is no development for Italy.”
