Big words fly at Vittoria

Of Emiliano Di Rosa June 17, 2024

The latest investigation in chronological order that shed light on mafia infiltration in the packaging trade on the Catania-Ragusa-Vittoria axis starts from the investigations in the 2016/2023 period, reconstructing the figure of Elio Greco and the roles assumed over time by the other 15 suspects, recipients of precautionary measures. Between the lines of reports and press articles, the mayor of Vittoria, Ciccio Aiello, is keen to make a series of clarifications…

The discussion then broadens and enters a sort of long cone of shadow in the relationships between the majority and the opposition (dialectical of course), in particular those between the mayor and exponents of the Brothers of Italy. It is no mystery that the tones of confrontation have been very heated for a long time nor that recently they have been, in some cases, even more exasperated. The crux of the matter is always found in the dissolution of the Municipality of Vittoria due to the mafia. It was 2018, the year that marked the total tightening of the tone. The Fratelli d’Italia city councilor, Alfredo Vinciguerra, among other things claims that without that dissolution Aiello would never have won the 2021 elections…

Vinciguerra refers to the recent acquittal on appeal for the former mayor of Vittoria, Giovanni Moscato: fully acquitted of the charge of electoral corruption. The Attorney General Nicolò Marino had requested confirmation of the first degree sentence, one year and four months in prison. Moscato’s defenders, Enrico Trantino and Carlo Pietrarossi, asked for acquittal and obtained it. In the meantime Giovanni Moscato has been appointed provincial coordinator of Fratelli d’Italia in Ragusa. After the dissolution of the Municipality of Vittoria, a prefectural commission was established which – also due to Covid – remained in office for a total of 3 years and 5 months, instead of 18 months. Even today it is clear that that experience left its mark on the city. The point is to understand if and how in the future there will be the conditions to calm the tone and set up a public political debate, if not friendly, at least more based on mutual respect…
