Medical excellence focuses on Unical

Exceeded 100 applications for the international call

In recent days, the University of Calabria closed, with considerable success, the last call to recruit professors and researchers in the medical field, attracting the interest of over 100 high-profile medical teachers at a national and international level.

The initiative is part of the quality recruitment process, to strengthen the link between the university and the regional healthcare system, anticipating the hiring of professionals who will teach in the degree course in Medicine and Surgery and Digital Technologies and who will have a role, also top management, in some departments of the hospital and of the Irccs – Inrca of Cosenza.

The intent of the rector of Unical, Nicola Leone, is to encourage further scientific and cultural growth of the university, to qualify teaching and research in a stronger way, as well as to create the conditions to increase the competitive value of the university and its ability to intercept and increase external financing. The call fits into this context, covering professor and researcher positions in a wide range of medical areas.

From the analysis of the applications received, it emerged that 41 candidates are already employed at other universities, while 23 are “returning brains”, professionals who have developed experience outside Calabria and are now ready to return, contributing with their skills gained in national and foreign contexts.

A particularly relevant aspect is that among the candidates also stands out a group of professionals who already hold the role of department heads, ten in total, of which six are Calabrians who currently work outside the region. Applications came from different areas of the country, including renowned universities such as Naples, Rome, Padua, Pisa, Bologna and Milan, as well as from abroad, with applications coming from Macedonia, Germany, Switzerland and even Kansas.

Training and assistance

«We are very satisfied with the response received to this call – commented the Rector – which replicates the success of the previous one, following which we recruited four medical teachers, three of whom went on to fill the role of director of the complex operational unit. In an area where hospital competitions often go unnoticed, the high number of applications from high-profile university medical specialists is excellent news which will allow us to select the best talents to further strengthen our university and the Annunziata hospital . We know how important it is to limit the phenomenon of healthcare migration to other areas, guaranteeing citizens fair and timely access to care. Thanks to new excellent skills, we will be able to contribute to progressively reducing waiting lists and service shortages, concretely improving the quality of care.”

«Our efforts to enrich the teaching staff with highly qualified personalities – explains the Rector – make Unical increasingly attractive, as demonstrated by the enormous increase in applications for enrollments in three-year degrees: we have risen by 27% in early admission just concluded . A figure that gives us hope for the participation in the call for master’s degrees, open until 3 July, also for the 10 international courses which, from this year, can be accessed by taking the admission test remotely”.
