“In Suburbia [theater]” in the courtyards of public housing and in the public gardens of Florence

An exhibition designed for a large and heterogeneous audience, to guarantee transversal access to culture, thanks to the free nature of the initiative and the capillarity of territorial diffusion, the idea of ​​turning unusual places into stages to create new encounters. “In Suburbia [theater]” is a project by Fa.RM Fabbrica dei Racconti e della Memoria, a cultural association born from the collaboration between Fiamma Negri and Giusi Salis which has always built story formulas that can reach audiences who are not used to frequenting theaters.

Also this year “In Suburbia [theater]” has two sections: “In Suburbia [theater]”Florenceincluded in the billboard ofFlorentine Summer 2024 – initiative proposed in the Operational Plan of the City of Florence”, in collaboration with the Quartieri 2,3,4,5 and Legambiente and “In Suburbia [theater]” Metropolis with the support and patronage of the Municipality of Campi Bisenzio and the patronage of the Municipality of Fiesole. Both sections are created in collaboration with Casa SpA.

The event will take place starting from 18 June 2024 in the courtyards of public housing and in the public gardens of the Metropolitan City, and will include 22 performances in 11 different locations. Among these, in Florence: the public housing in Via Canova, Villa Pallini and Villa Arrivabene, the small square of Rocca Tedalda, Via della Sala, the Gav centre, the Anconella Park, the Bibliotecanova Garden. In the Metropolitan City instead: the ERP condominium in Campi Bisenzio and Scandicci and Piazza delle Gualchiere in Fiesole. The sites were chosen in agreement with the neighborhoods and with the housing self-management committees suggested by Casa SpA, a path that triggers collaboration with residents for the dissemination of events and meetings with the public after the shows.

Deep attention is paid to the choice of language. “In Suburbia [theater]” is the first review entirely translated in sign language and will also see the creation of short films explanatory podcasts which allow more accessible use to the blind public.

Scheduled shows

“Eisbolè, a geographical map that becomes theater” by and with Fiamma Negri and Giusi Salis, tells with emotion, irony, awareness the reasons for migrations, the reasons for the “invasions” and the movements of people fleeing from wars and hunger. Those who suffer the violence of wars and conflicts of any nature are not just refugees, immigrants, poor people, they are a person with projects, desires, affections, emotions, rights. War can become banal, everyday life can unravel in the midst of hell: joys, sorrows, joy, love. From our homes distant events lose complexity and are reduced to perceptions: invasion, stolen work, danger, degradation, poor things, solidarity, there are also the good ones. Telling a geographical map, making it speak through different points of view, understanding how, in the world, reality is filtered by glances and cultures, how effects are confused with causes, sometimes by mistake, sometimes by choice (show from eleven years old upward).

“If life isn’t a dream, do you know what it is?” by and with Letizia Sacco is inspired by two stories by Lewis Carroll “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Beyond the Looking Glass”. The great undisputed protagonist is the word.
As in a dream, stories, characters, landscapes follow one another without stopping. A bizarre world turned upside down that reveals the absurdities and inconsistencies of adult life. A journey through nonsense and paradoxes, a dive into a dreamscape made up of extremely unreal situations. Going beyond the patterns of norms and conventions, this show is a journey into a reality far from everyday life, absurd and apparently senseless and therefore disorienting, mysterious and initially “uncomfortable” but certainly very fascinating.
