It took place this morning in Ragusa prison the hearing to validate the detention of the Judicial Police against Wajdi Zaoualithe thirty-year-old of Tunisian origins who in Vittoria, in the Ragusa area, he exterminated his family by setting fire to the house in via dell’Unità. The mother, Mariem Sassi, aged 55, and her eldest daughter, Samah Zaouali, aged 34, died within hours of each other on 13 June. The father Kamel Zaouali, a member of the board of directors of the Islamic community of Vittoria, and his youngest daughter Omaima, aged 19, are still hospitalized in intensive care in Palermo and Catania.
In this morning’s hearing, before the investigating judge Vincenzo Ignaccolo, Wajdi Zaouali answered the magistrates’ questions, but nothing was leaked about his statements. The deputy prosecutor Marina Dall’Amico, in charge of the investigations, asked for the validation of the arrest, the defense lawyer Giovanni Ascone asked for Wajdi Zaouali to be placed in a prison facility equipped with a psychiatric section that can treat the young man’s disorders, already in care at the Department of Mental Health.
The investigating judge reserved his decision. Meanwhile, Mariem Sassi’s body is in the morgue of the Vittoria hospital, while that of the young Samah is in Catania. The magistrate has not yet made a decision regarding the return of the bodies to the family members
