General Claudio Graziano, former Chief of Defense Staff and president of the European Union Military Committee, president of Fincantieri since 2022 was found dead this morning, Monday 17 June, in his home in Rome. His body was found in the bedroom at 9.50 am by a policeman from his escort. It would be a suicide, a shot fired in the head with his gun. The weapon and a note were found next to the body. The Rome prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation file on the hypothesis of the crime of incitement to suicide.
Graziano, born in Turin, an Alpine soldier, immediately commander of the rifle platoon of the “Susa” Alpine battalion in Pinerolo, in his long military career he had been at the helm of the 2nd Alpine regiment of the “Taurinense” Brigade in Cuneo in 1996 in the barracks of San Rocco Castagnaretta before taking on the role of Chief of the Planning Office of the Army General Staff and then as Military Attache at the Italian Embassy in Washington in the United States. Upon returning to Italy he assumed command of the “Taurinense” Alpine Brigade in 2004, then taking command of the “Kabul Multinational Brigade” in Afghanistan and upon his return he continued in the role of Commander of the “Taurinense” until 2 March 2006. From there a long series of roles until 2011 when he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Army and subsequently promoted to the rank of General and from February 2015 to November 2018 he was Chief of Defense Staff. From 2017 until 2022 he held the position of President of the Military Committee of the European Union (European Union Military Committee). And from 16 May 2022 he became president of the board of directors of Fincantieri SpA and from 28 September 2022 President of Assonave (Assonave national naval engineering industry).
