Those who traveled the roads of Verbano and Valcuvia on the morning of Sunday 16 June realized the success of the Varese Van Vlaanderenthe non-competitive ride with departure and arrival in Cittiglio, divided into different routes with a single common denominator: the passage over the “walls”the short but steep climbs that dot the Varese area and are reminiscent of those in Flanders.
They were the ones who got into the saddle almost 400 enthusiasts (391 the official count) – alone, in small groups, in teams – who divided themselves between the two routes of the randonnée and the one dedicated to bicycles gravel, the latter with numerous stretches of dirt road. In total there were 21 “walls” that put the pedalers to the test.
Varese Van Vlaanderen was on stage for the fourth time, based on FeStìAmo Park in Cittiglio, a place that confirms a cycling vocation born from the times of its most famous fellow citizen, Alfredo Binda, three-time world champion and winner of five Giro d’Italia.
The organization has prepared the routes five refreshments, cwith special attention to celiac athletes who had a section dedicated to them available. At the awards ceremony the recognition in memory of Massimo Minelli for the largest group: the trophy went to Campo dei Fiori Cycling Group which preceded the National Group and the Funtos Bike Team in this ranking. The fifth edition has already been scheduled, with the “blessing” of Mayor Rossella Magnani: it will be June 15, 2025.
