In the relationship between total withdrawals and availability of surface and underground water, Sardinia is struggling and among the 12 Italian regions at risk of water stress. This is what emerges from the analysis carried out by Community Water Value for Italy by The European House – Ambrosetti who drew a map of the water situation throughout Italy. The ranking is drawn up on the basis of a score – from one to 5 – which is given precisely by the relationship between withdrawals and water availability which places Sardinia at 4.1 together with Molise also due to the increase in temperatures and the man’s way of acting.
Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily, Puglia are the most exposed of all: Sardinia is in the second tier in tenth place behind Campania, Lazio, Marche and Umbria, Tuscany, next to Molise and ahead of Abruzzo. Two sectors are most affected by global warming and drought: agriculture and hydroelectricity. According to the Community Valore Acqua, experts estimate that by 2030 water stress will further intensify in some Italian regions.
Sardinia is in the red zone: dangerously close to the maximum stress of Basilicata (5) and very far from regions such as Lombardy and Trentino, at 1.7 and 1.3 respectively. “The water situation in Italy – explains Valerio De Molli, Managing Partner and CEO of The European House-Ambrosetti – requires immediate and concerted action. A concrete commitment is needed from all the actors involved, from institutions to citizens, to promote sustainable water management practices and invest in innovative technologies that allow us to face this emergency. It is important to modernize and make our water infrastructures more efficient, to optimize the collection and storage of water, activating the 20% of the potentially exploitable volumes already present in the large Italian dams”.
