GIULIANOVA. The Giulianova fish market says goodbye to polystyrene and introduces new reusable containers for the protection of the sea. The protagonists of this initiative, financially supported by the Municipality and the ecological operator Rieco, are the fishermen of the Giuliese navy and the local fish market, which has always been at the forefront in combining tradition and innovation, in the name of environmental sustainability. Since last week, Giulianova’s trawlers have completely eliminated the use of polystyrene for preserving the catch, replacing it with 5,000 reusable plastic boxes equipped with microchips for traceability. The news was given by the president of the “Mare blu” cooperative Walter Squeo, who comments with satisfaction: «This is an important step towards more eco-friendly fishing, which guarantees the freshness of the product and drastically reduces the environmental impact. The new boxes”, continues Squeo, who is also a member of Cogevo, the consortium that brings together the clams, “are equipped with a microchip that allows the catch to be traced along the entire supply chain, from capture of the product to the final consumer: an innovative system , already in use in Campania, which guarantees transparency and food safety, offering the consumer the certainty of the origin of the fish”. The fish market, thanks to financial funding from the Municipality, has equipped itself with modern equipment for washing ecological plastic containers: an efficient and environmentally friendly hygiene service, «with a cost of just one euro for washing of each case”, reports the fish market representative Luigi Massi.
But the protection of the sea does not stop at trawlers. The Cogevo consortium continues the waste collection project at sea during fishing operations. «Ours is an action to raise awareness and clean the seabed which has led to the removal of several tons of waste», continues Squeo, «giving the sea back its beauty and balance. The Julian sea is clean, as demonstrated by the increasingly numerous sightings of dolphins and turtles in our waters”, underlines the president of “Mare blu” with pride and continues: “The presence of so many dolphins and turtles is unusual and represents an indicator biological system of a healthy and vital ecosystem”.
