Torre del Greco, the own goal on the “electoral differentiation”: the ballot boxes abandoned in the Viale Sardegna market

Greek’s tower. «The European elections will be an opportunity to raise citizens’ awareness of separate waste collection». This is what the municipal administration led by mayor Luigi Mennella claimed – through the environmental councilor Antonio Ramondo – on the eve of the last race to the polls: an “advert” to promote the installation of a series of ecoboxes in the schools identified as headquarters elections, which became yet another own goal for the “super-expert” at the refusal of the Palazzo Baronial council.

Because if voters and polling station workers made every effort to ensure correct waste separation, the workers responsible for the subsequent disposal of “election waste” did not prove to be equally “sensitive”.

In fact, a week after the vote, piles of empty ballot boxes and others full of paper waste are piled up in the Viale Sardegna area. The numerous boxes – used for the recent European elections, with the logo of the Ministry of the Interior clearly visible – have been abandoned for days along the northern area of the fruit and vegetable market.

A truly painful image and not exactly “exemplary” and “educational” for the municipal administration. “For years now this important site has been a no-man’s land” angrily states Giovanni, an elderly shopper who frequents the market’s retailers. «This is demonstrated – he continues – by the various important properties in disastrous conditions, surrounded by weeds and waste of all kinds. Unfortunately, the market has become a no-man’s land.”

Giovanni is not wrong, as the approximately 5000 square meters of the Viale Sardegna area have long been subjected to very serious environmental damage. It is no coincidence that in 2020, the northern area, where the boxes/urns are currently thrown away, was seized by the Torre Annunziata Prosecutor’s Office for urban planning and environmental crimes. «In this space there has never been a shortage of waste of all kinds, from leachate to dangerous and special waste, as is still present now – reports Mario, another local buyer – but seeing the ‘remnants’ of the last elections today is really sad . Kilos and kilos of cardboard to be disposed of who knows when. An unacceptable condition, of profound degradation and shame. And to think that the large area, if properly valorised, could represent a strong economic, social and commercial driving force for the entire city of Torre del Greco”.

An objective, at the moment, ignored by the municipal administration of the spot-bluffs.
