“This is how we fill the lack of agricultural workers”

For a few weeks they have been involved in the maintenance and care of the olive groves and vineyards of the Fraternita estates. There are a total of three migrants hired as laborers by the ancient city institution. “These are young people from Africa and Asia – explains the first rector Pier Luigi Rossi -. We asked them to work on our agricultural estates and, for some time now, they have been working”.

The three boys are part of the group of asylum seekers welcomed by the Fraternita dei Laici within its cas (extraordinary reception center) located in the municipality of Civitella. Migrants have been hosted here for years according to the distribution established by the government and, subsequently, by the local prefectures.

“What has just begun – explains the first rector Rossi – is a particularly intense period for our agricultural activity. Our estates, as is known, extend over an area of approximately 1,000 hectares, located in the municipalities of Arezzo, Civitella in Val di Chiana and Castiglion Fibocchi. Over the past centuries, these lands have been cultivated with care, maintaining an ideal environment for the growth of vines and olive trees. Inside the company there are two cellars: the first, of a historical nature , is located in a building dating back to the early 1900s and is used for storage and aging in wooden barrels and barriques, with controlled temperature rooms initial storage”.

“In order to be able to carry out agricultural operations on our land – continues Rossi – we have hired the three migrants who will work in the area where they live. With this operation we also want to give a social response by allowing them to learn honest work that allows them to live in our country, freeing them from exploitation and other negative situations. At the same time, we have allowed our agricultural company to carry out important manual operations in the vineyards and olive groves for which it is increasingly difficult to find personnel”.
