Olbia airport is a champion of sustainability

Geasar SpA, the management company of Olbia Costa Smeralda airport, has been recognized as one of the 240 Italian companies “Sustainability Leaders 2024”, according to the survey conducted by Sole 24 Ore and Statista. This recognition, which positions Geasar as the only company in Sardinia included in the list, it adds to the recent confirmation of the certification at Level 3 Optimization of the Airport Carbon Accreditation program of Aci Europehighlighting Geasar’s continued commitment to sustainable practices.

L’Olbia airport has stood out, in particular, for its commitment to the following key areas of sustainability. Social sphere: Geasar has invested significantly in staff training, with an average of 74 hours of training per employee. Economic area: The airport has experienced economic growth of 54% compared to the previous year, with an important direct, indirect and induced impact on the reference territory. Environmental Area: Geasar, in addition to efforts to reduce emissions, has worked on the implementation of procedures which has led to achieving a waste recycling rate equal to82%.

On an international level and in the specific airport sector, Geasar also has obtained confirmation of Level 3 Optimization certification of the Airport Carbon Accreditation program of ACI Europe (the trade association of European airports), aligning Olbia airport with international best practices in terms of reduction of CO2 emissions.

Below are the main initiatives of planned sustainability which allowed the certification to be obtained. Solar power: Installation of a photovoltaic system on the shelters of the airport’s car parks, which will satisfy up to 25% of the airport’s energy needs. Climate Efficiency: Adoption of advanced and low energy consumption air conditioning systems. Sustainable mobility: Progressive replacement of internal combustion engine airport vehicles with electric vehicles, thanks to funding from Enac. Recycling and Waste Reduction: Increase in the percentage of separated waste. Emissions Policies: Implementation of company policies to reduce direct and indirect emissions, also thanks to the involvement of employees and stakeholders (airlines, trade associations, local community, etc.).
