This weekend’s match event takes place, as often happens, in the ring of the MGM in Las Vegas. Frank Martin(18.0) with 12 knockouts) native of Detroit, will challenge the undefeated WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis in an organizational proposal by Tom Brown and Sampson Lewkowicz. The southpaw from Baltimore has the talent and power to be a reigning champion for a long time if he manages to avoid the personal and legal troubles that have affected his life to date.
Officially Davis has not had a normal preparation having stayed in his country’s prisons on two occasions recently so it is difficult to know his true form. His opponent is in a diametrically opposite situation. Martin had known about this challenge for some time and had time to prepare meticulously. Both boxers have good technical skills and a lot of power. On paper, Martin is superior in speed and his left jab (they are both left-handed) is as precise and perhaps more so than Tank’s but the champion has a key to every match when he activates his powerful shots.
A significant comparison is natural to make with another left-handed player that Davis has faced recently: Hector Luis Garcia faced in Washington January 2023, Davis worked a lot on the midsection to avoid the excellent jab that started from the long arms of the Dominican from Las Vegas. Then two tight hooks at close range were enough to close a match that “Tank” was not dominating at all.
In short, this could be the “leitmotif” of this evening but with the difference that Frank Martin is capable of doing much more harm than Garcia. The challenger also has a solid chin and is therefore able to take the match far and win several rounds but his experience and ability to grasp Gervonta’s “magic moment” do not give him too many numbers in the predictions.
