Pistoia, they treated him for 3 years with creams, antibiotics and diuretics. But he had a malignant prostate tumor and died

The they cure for about 3 years with creams and diuretics but him he had a malignant prostate tumor and by the time he realizes it, it’s already over too late and he dies.

The urologist’s conviction at the Pistoia Court

According to the Court of Pistoia, the person responsible for the tragic event is the urologist who treated him, who was convicted for omitted diagnosis and will now have to compensate his heirs.

The damage to be quantified

Judge Matteo Marini in the ruling published last June 5th only reserved the right, with a forthcoming order, to quantify the total damage.

The family is asking for 600 thousand euros in compensation

The man’s widow and his daughter, through their trusted lawyer, the lawyer Paolo Giuliano Lensi, asked about 600 thousand euros of compensation plus legal costs and in the next few days the Court will establish the exact amount of the amount because the expert reports ordered in the trial were not exhaustive on the specific point.

It all starts in 2013…

It all began in 2013 when the man, a doctor from Pistoia, turned to the urologist for some ailments that were afflicting him and since his family of origin already had a history of prostate cancer which had led to the death of his brother, he had asked for specific tests for the discomfort he had been experiencing for some time when urinating.

Every year since 2006 he underwent tests to monitor his prostate and, being a doctor himself, he did so with great precision and punctuality, as can be seen from the trial report.

The first suspicions

But in June 2013, since the blood test had revealed that the prostate specific enzyme had reached suspicious values, he turned to a urologist at his clinic who, after a few visits, reassured him by prescribing a treatment with antibiotics for an infection, according to him, which was the cause of his ailments.

In 2014 the pain began

In 2014, however, pain in the pelvic area added to the discomfort and the urologist visited him again and this time also added a cream and found nothing abnormal.

In 2015 it got worse

In November 2015, despite worsening dysuria (difficulty urinating) with pain in his right side, he prescribed a specific diuretic for what he believed were harmless prostate problems. But that wasn’t the case.

In the trial it emerged that in December 2015 and January 2016 the now tired and disheartened man, given the persistence of the symptoms, decided to turn to another urologist who, after a series of careful tests, diagnosed him with the unfortunate disease: neoplasia advanced prostate, no longer operable.

Death in 2020

After about 3 and a half years, in May 2020 the man dies and his family cannot rest because it is now clear that the initial diagnosis was wrong.

The medical-legal reports: if they had operated on him in time…

In the classroom medico-legal reports they demonstrated that a timely diagnosis, however, would have allowed the removal of the tumor which would have greatly extended his life expectancy. The urologist finally would not have complied with the planned protocols for these cases, also given that the patient “was not just any patient” but had previous fatal events in the family due to the same terrible disease and for this reason he underwent cyclical medical examinations.

In short, according to the judge, the tragedy could have been avoided. From these conclusions the condemnation of the urologist for omitted diagnosis and for professional responsibility.
