‘Elephants in Room’, opens the Venice Theater Biennale – Theatre

With the video, the installation ‘Elephants in room’, by Gob Squad, an Anglo-German collective that will receive the Silver Lion on 16 June, was inaugurated in Forte Marghera (Venice), the 52nd International Theater Festival of Venice Biennial.

Present, the president of the Biennale, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, the curators, Stefano Ricci and Gianni Forte (ricci/forte) said: “It is always difficult to interpret time, that of yesterday, that of today and that of tomorrow, we try with the theater ” because “theater is like life, it is never crystallized”. For the curators, the Biennale Teatro means “meeting and dialogue between artists, audiences, operators and critics who all bring their contribution to an event that is a search for discovery that involves the soul”.

The Biennale Teatro, entitled ‘Niger et Albus’ brings 130 artists to the stage for 55 events with 16 premieres of which 7 are productions and co-productions of the Biennale. Playwrights, directors, performers, young artists also selected with the Biennale College such as Stefano Fortin and Carolina Balucani, authors respectively of ‘Cenere’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’, texts which, after last year’s stage readings, make their directorial debut in complete form by Giorgina Pi and Fabrizio Arcuri.

Still on the drama front, this year it will be Rosalinda Conti’s turn with ‘Così were le cose as soon as the light was born’, of which we will see the stage reading curated by Martina Badiluzzi; while Eliana Rotella and her ‘Livido’ will always be proposed in the form of a stage reading by Fabio Conde. Even Ciro Gollano, after a series of preparatory stages from which he emerges winner of the Directors’ College, will present his ‘Chrysalides’ on the stage of the festival.

Finally, Elia Pangaro is newly appointed on the site-specific performance front with ‘Bolide, deus ex machina’.

The event, which starts on June 15th, will close on Sunday June 30th, combining the mainland with the lagoon city with a historical recovery of abandoned historic spaces.
