Sunday 16 June twelve athletes from Defense Paralympic Sports Group (GSPD) will carry out, for the third consecutive year, the crossing of the Strait of Messina starting from Torre Faro near Capo Peloro (ME) and will swim along a stretch of sea 3,800 meters until reaching the opposite bank on the Calabria side. The Undersecretary of State for Defense Senator Isabella will also take part in the crossing, an event with a high moral and symbolic value. Rauti – who will also make the crossing aboard an eight-person Jole boat this year – and the Inspector Admiral of the Port Authority Luca Sancilio, Deputy Chief of the V General Affairs Department of the Defense General Staff. Some athletes, expert swimmers, will cover the 3,800 meter course, others will take turns in the water in an exciting relay, while the last 100 meters they will be crossed by all 12 athletes who will swim together side by side, to symbolize the team spirit and the harmony that animates all the members of the GSPD. The Strait of Messina will thus become, for the third consecutive year, the theater of an adventure launched by the GSPD (established in December 2014) and of which those soldiers who have suffered a disability during service. The event, organized by the V Department of the SMD, is carried out in collaboration with the local Navy and Port Authority offices and, above all, thanks to the help of the “ASD Ulysse Swimming”, an amateur sports association that has been organizing and coordinating both competitive and amateur crossings of the Strait for some time.
