train chaos in view of the Jubilee, no night connections

There are no night trains to connect Fiumicino airport to Rome, creating inconvenience for thousands of people who land or depart from Fiumicino at night.

The situation is risky to worsen with the arrival of the Jubilee, when the flow of passengers will increase significantly.

Rome Airports raises the alarm: “It’s almost becoming an emergency,” said Andrea Giordano, head of the infrastructure operating unit at Aeroporti di Roma. The company sent a written request to the Lazio Region and the Italian Railway Network (RFI) to ask for an increase in night connections.

Adr data:

  • Trains are the preferred means of transport for passengers to travel to and from Fiumicino, with usage rising from 25% to 35% since 2019.
  • Between 5.30 and 6.30 in the morning there are 22 train departures and between 10.30 and 1.00 at night there are 42 movements (arrivals and departures).
  • An adequate night service is essential to guarantee a service “worthy of an international airport”, as Giordano underlined.

RFI’s response:

RFI explained that it is not possible to increase night-time connectionsdue to the lack of adequate infrastructure. The railway line that connects Fiumicino to Rome is single track and maintenance activities take place during the night.

The addition of new night trains it would compress maintenance activities, creating problems for the safety and efficiency of the service.

The solution:

According to RFI, the solution to the problem can only come with the doubling of the railway line, with the construction of new tracks. This is a complex and expensive project that will take time to complete.

While waiting for the line to double, Rome Airports and RFI are working to improve the night shuttle bus service.

The Jubilee could worsen the situation:

The increase in the flow of passengers on the occasion of the Jubilee it could make the connection between Fiumicino and Rome even more problematic.

The authorities they are working to find alternative solutions, such as increasing taxis and car sharing services.
