GROSSETO – The relationship between diabetes and cancer is the theme at the center of the studies of the conference this Saturday 15 June in Grosseto.
The meeting was held at the Hotel Airone and is entitled «Diabetes and Cancer – the role of the diabetologist», with the organization of Loredana Rizzo, head of the Diabetology Unit of the Misericordia hospital and from Walter Baronti, medical director of the department.
Diabetes and cancer are two chronic diseases whose spread is constantly increasing in the world. Epidemiological studies show that people who suffer from diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, are at greater risk of developing certain types of cancer, but the opposite is also true. Approximately 20% of cancer patients also suffer from diabetes mellitus and this pathology has an unfavorable effect on the prognosis of tumors.
A dedicated diabetology clinic has been active in Grosseto for about a year, involving collaboration with oncology and surgeon colleagues. This clinic has already evaluated and treated numerous patients, thus facilitating full integration of care and their multi-professional care. The outpatient activity was also made possible thanks to the training and involvement of the nursing staff and through the support of colleagues in the clinical nutrition department and fellow dieticians.
«With this first onco-diabetic day in Grosseto – declares Loredana Rizzo – we want to represent a moment of cultural growth, discussion and multi-professional collaboration. The objective is a mutual exchange between the oncologist and the diabetologist in order to encourage the improvement of the services offered and the facilitation of a treatment path for the patient and his family”.
