Shock attack in Agrigento: 118 rescuer beaten by patient and family member

Seus’s solidarity for yet another act of violence against Healthcare Workers

A serious episode of violence shook the city of Agrigento yesterday afternoon, where a Seus rescue worker was brutally attacked. The tragic event occurred while the rescuer was providing assistance to a patient, who together with a family member, began to hit him repeatedly. The operator lost consciousness following the ferocious attack, suffering a head injury.

The rescuer was immediately transported under code red to the emergency room of the San Giovanni di Dio hospital, where he is currently under close medical observation.

Seus’s conviction and support for his injured colleague

The board of directors of Seus, represented by the president Riccardo Castro, Pietro Marchetta and Maria Stella Marino, expressed its firm condemnation for this latest episode of violence against 118 personnel. “A cowardly act, unfortunately yet another against of the 118 operators, who carry out their duty with great professionalism and self-sacrifice,” declared the Seus representatives. “The utmost solidarity goes to our rescuer, we are ready to protect him in every location”.

Giuseppe Misuraca, head of the 118 Operations Center in Agrigento, also expressed his disdain: “I strongly condemn this serious act of violence which once again affects emergency personnel. We are close to our colleague and wish him a speedy recovery.”

A recurring problem for 118 operators

This episode once again highlights the danger to which 118 operators are exposed on a daily basis, as they carry out their work with dedication despite the risks. It is essential that more effective measures are taken to ensure their safety and that acts of violence such as this are firmly punished.

The Nurse Times editorial team expresses its solidarity with the rescuer involved and invites the competent authorities to take immediate measures to protect healthcare workers, so that they can continue to carry out their precious work in safer conditions.
