Rental Bonus, new economic help for families in Sicily

The Schifani Government and Councilor Aricò have announced significant economic help for Sicilian tenants through the Rental Bonus. This initiative aims to mitigate the growing difficulties of families in dealing with rental costs, in a context where purchasing homes is increasingly difficult due to the increase in interest rates on mortgages.

In recent years, many families have been forced to resort to renting, also due to the spread of short-term rental formulas, which are particularly profitable in a tourist region like Sicily. This trend has contributed to a significant increase in traditional rents. The exponential growth of portals dedicated to short-term rentals, such as Airbnb, which went from 8,000 listings in 2017 to over 16,000 in 2023, highlights this dynamic. In Palermo, for example, there are around 3,000 adverts for short-term rentals, compared to less than 1,000 for traditional rentals.

Faced with this situation, the Schifani Government approved the Rental Bonus Announcement, an initiative aimed at supporting families in difficulty. The Councilor for Infrastructure, Alessandro Aricò, declared that the financial allocation of 21.4 million euros was approved by the National Fund for supporting access to rental housing of the Ministry of Infrastructure.

These resources will be allocated to those who have a rental contract for public, private or social housing with an ISEE lower than the maximum expected level.

Luca Tantino, CASA MIA delegate for the Province of Palermo, underlined that the resources will be distributed to those who need them most. Andrea Monteleone, Secretary of the ANIA Tenants Union, declared: “This Announcement on the Rent Bonus is a social equity tool necessary to support the real economy of the Island”. The measure will help reduce the disputes and evictions due to arrears that plague the Sicilian courts.

The Sicilian Region, following the example of the Mortgage Bonus, continues to concretely support citizens. After helping landlords with high mortgages, tenants will now also be able to benefit from real support to cope with high rents.
