Mask case, Irene Pivetti on trial in Busto Arsizio

The former president of the Chamber Irene Pivetti was sent back to trial yesterday by the Gup of the Court of Busto Arsizio (Varese) who accepted the request of the prosecutor Ciro Caramore. The former president of the Chamber is accused in various capacities, together with her daughter, her son-in-law, the entrepreneur Luciano Mega and other people – all indicted for trial – of fraud in public supplies, bankruptcy, embezzlement, money laundering and self-laundering in the of a sale from China of masks for a total value of 35 million euros which arrived at Malpensa during the Covid emergency. The hearing will open on November 21st.

According to the accusation, masks worth only 10 million were delivered, of poor quality, practically unusable and with a false CE mark.

There are 13 civil parties who have appeared in court. These include the State, the Ministry of the Interior, the Customs Agency, the Revenue Agency, as well as the main hospital medical facilities that received the masks.

The defense had requested that proceedings be dismissed. The hearing will open on November 21st. It is almost certain that even there the defense will raise an objection of territorial incompetence, asking that the trial be moved to Milan or Rome. An exception already rejected several times by the Busto Arsizio court.

A few days ago in Milan the Prosecutor’s Office in another trial asked for a 4-year sentence for Irene Pivetti for tax evasion.
