Journey to the edge of the mind: Vettor Pisani’s anthology at Ciac in Foligno

The Ciac of Foligno dedicates a vast anthological exhibition to Vettor Pisani (Bari, July 1934 – Rome, 22 August 2011), a multifaceted artist among the most representative of the international contemporary art scene between the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. “Vettor Pisani. Journey to the edge of the mind”, is set up in the Italian Contemporary Art Center of Foligno from 9 June to 22 September 2024.

Curated by Italo Tommasoni, the exhibition is promoted and supported by the Cassa di Risparmio di Foligno Foundation, in collaboration with Maggioli Cultura e Turismo. A compendium of over 50 masterpieces selected from the works of the seventies and those of subsequent production, until the author’s death.

Also on display is photographic material, a still image of the performances which, unrepeatable, are thus documented and fixed in the dimension of the eternal. In particular, the materials relating to “L’Androgino. Human flesh and gold” (1971), in the edition presented in Rome in the historic exhibition “Contemporanea” (1973), and those relating to “Stories of Heroes. The murdered part” (1975).
The exhibition also features a polyptych of 8 works by Vettor Pisani recomposed as an inverted pyramid by his beloved wife Mimma Pisani in 2012.

Reluctant towards the poetics of the seventies, Vettor Pisani has developed a vision ofindependent art and non-conformist, inspired by dimension mythological and spiritual of Hermeticism and doctrines prior to Christianity. Gifted with a boundless and multifaceted culture, he created visionary works that address the problem of truth in art and primordial existentialist themes.
The enigmatic debut leaves room for the evolution of a language and an approach critical of art history and, in particular, of Central European Symbolist art. Critical and revisionist towards the historical avant-gardes and the trends that characterize contemporary art, he is influenced by the poetics of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, by the poetry of Novalis and Von Kleist, by the painting of Boeklin, Khnopff, Moreau, as well as by the culture of alchemy and psychoanalysis. From contemporary times he critically shares the works of Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Ives Klein and Gino de Dominicis.

The exhibition is curated by Italo Tomassoni who had a long association with the artist who, for long and repeated periods, was his guest in Foligno, as in a sort of revival of traditional artistic patronage. During the exhibition, a voice over by Vettor Pisani, preserved on six tapes, is broadcast in the background.

The works come from various collections and, for the most part, from the collection of the Morra Foundation in Naples, from the Vettor Pisani Museum in Caggiano and from the Pieroni-Stiefelmeier collection in Rome, but also from the Jacorossi Collection in Rome, Cardelli and Fontana di Sarzana , Paneghini Collection of Busto Arsizio. They will be accompanied by a large collection of catalogues, photographs, documents and unpublished materials.
A particular documentary section in memory is dedicated to publications by Mimma Pisanithe artist’s wife, muse, critic and performer.
