Campi Flegrei: in case of eruption, there is a 72-hour escape plan towards Lombardy

The Civil Protection has developed an escape plan to save half a million people within 72 hours in the event of an eruption of the Campi Flegrei volcano. Although the volcano is currently classified at the yellow alert level and no imminent eruption is expected, the emergency plan includes escape in the event of a red alert level. This would involve the evacuation of cities such as Pozzuoli, Bacoli and Monte di Procida, with destinations such as Lombardy, Umbria, Marche, Abruzzo, Molise and Sicily. The plan will be tested in October and will involve all Italian regions, each of which is called upon to draw up its own plan to identify first reception points, accommodation, healthcare and services. The expected expenditure is 65 euros per person per day, for a total of 5 million euros per day and 150 million in a month. However, the mayor of Bacoli, Josi Della Ragione, underlined that many people did not participate in the 2019 exercise and hopes that in October there will be many more. Furthermore, the plan is currently being examined by the Regions and has been subject to recent changes. Finally, the volcanic risk exercise will be of great importance to test the effectiveness of the escape plan and the effective collaboration of all the regions involved.
