In this climate of an electoral campaign which sometimes takes on laughable tones due to the satirical repercussions deriving from advertising initiatives, associations and citizens reflect from the outside on what they read from online newspapers and see through social media. Today a note from Giulio Giardina arrives in the editorial office, a professional from Gelato traveling around Italy who loves his native land.

“In this last period of the electoral campaign we are incessantly inundated with good intentions, words of know-it-alls and triumphalist appeals which clash with the harsh reality and with the numerous worries which disturb the many families of Gelato.
In all this there is Gela, who records objective data and numbers of a mountain to climb,
unfortunately the inevitable legacy of the bad management, carelessness and administrative improvisation of recent years:

Second to last province in Italy for quality of life (Caltanissetta ranks
106th out of 107 provinces).

Demographic decline which caused Gela to slip from fifth to seventh place in Sicily
by number of inhabitants, the result of many young people leaving with one-way tickets and
families.

State of financial distress of the municipal body for at least the next five years
with a debt of over 180 million.
I am not at all one of those who criticize Gela, our city, almost out of bias.
I love my land in an authentic way and for this very reason, I will never get tired of it
underline its critical issues, why say that there is a city with a stupendous sea and sunsets
breathtaking is fine, but in order for us to live well in Gela we must not stop
look around us, with a critical sense and a constructive spirit.

Gela today appears as a “patient” with many concomitant pathologies in different ways
apparatus. It is necessary to carry out a careful clinical examination, establish the diagnosis, but
above all, start a therapeutic plan with objectives that can be achieved in the short, medium and long term
term. We Gela people, also through voting, decide which doctor and team
deliver the health of our country. It is undeniable that in recent years the interventions of the “doctor” and the team to whom we had entrusted the health of the city have caused more damage
what else, hindering and delaying recovery and recovery towards optimal well-being.
The next team represented, first of all, by the Mayor and councilors but, in general,
by the political class, has and will have the arduous task of starting the process of treating the patient,
having a clear vision of the present and future of the city. We all know the many,
many critical issues that afflict the territory (from the hydro-geological crisis to the silting of the port system, from closed museums to the abandonment of sports facilities, from road defects to the absence of urban public transport, etc.) which, more or less, are reported in the programs of the various candidates. But what has been left out in all the programs
electoral is the “how” (practicability and sustainability between costs and benefits) and the “when” (with objectives in a time plan) useful results for the community will be achieved.

I therefore take this opportunity to issue a warning to the future new administration so that,
immediately following the elections, commit yourself, in a concrete and non-concrete manner
illusions, to establish a therapeutic action plan with precise times and priorities, with the aim of restoring dignity and respect to our tormented earth.
On the other side there are us citizens, who will have the duty to prove ourselves collaborative, active and with the will to “heal”, putting aside the mistrust and uncertainty in our abilities and in our land.

It is no longer time to stand still, it is no longer time to protect the petty interests of a few and to postpone decisions to others. It’s time to choose with a sense of responsibility. Choose hope over resignation. Choose to act on false promises. Choosing loyalty to turncoats.

For the Gela we desire, we need a thinking public opinion, thinking young people and women who make their contribution, not necessarily by holding a position within the building. Since there are no A or B citizens, everyone must be aware that they represent a precious resource in the perspective of cultural and economic development of a lively and livable Gela. We have a duty towards our history and towards the new generations, so that “leaving” is not the only path to building a future elsewhere, but there is the opportunity to stay and return to Gela in freedom”.
