Summer Eden is back: here is the program of the open-air cinema at the Viridarium

From today Summer Eden returnsthe Brescia cinema festival that brings the best films of the year and by authors to the heart of the Santa Giulia museum.

The initiative, organized by the Brescia Museums Foundation and the Municipality of Brescia, was born in 2021 and last year recorded over 14 thousand spectators. This year it begins today, Friday 14 June, and continues until 8 Septembereveryday: 83 evenings to experience quality cinema, from great classics to independents, from national and international cults to the most successful films of the last 24 months.

In parallel, the space for aperitifs will be open again (This evening? Museum! Food & drinks) set up between the Viridarium and the adjacent Sculpture Park with the visual designed by Elisa Puglielli, an Italian illustrator and visual designer, whose minimal, pop and very colorful style creates visual metaphors that give life to intimate and ironic atmospheres. The cinema proposal

The cinematic proposal of Summer Eden gets underway Friday 14 June at the Viridarium Parkthe green lung of the Santa Giulia museum complex, and will end on Sunday 8 September.

Screenings take place every day, from Monday to Sunday at 9.30pm (in June and July), And at 9.15pm (in August and September).

At the same time as the open-air cinema program, Nuovo Eden continues its programming, in the afternoon and early evening, in room 1 in via Nino Bixio which, after the renovation works, is equipped with optimal air conditioning: here the screenings of Summer Eden in rainy weather.

New for summer 2024 will be the video pills that will accompany numerous films in the programme, small insights curated by film critics and directors, which will be offered before the screening, to accompany the viewing of the film.

Cinema Revolution

For the second year, the Brescia Musei Foundation joins Cinema Revolution, the initiative promoted by all the components of the cinema sector – from producers to distributors up to exhibitors, with over 3 thousand participating screens throughout Italy – which, thanks to the extraordinary contribution of the Ministry of Culture, sets the ticket price for all European and Italian films, for the entire season, at 3.50 euros and corresponds to the cinema hall a additional support of 3 euros for each ticket detached.

A special opportunity to enjoy great cinema at an extremely discounted rate, an opportunity which, thanks to the fifth edition of Cinema in festa (9-13 June and 15-19 September) will also cover, for the periods indicated, all the programming of the New Eden.

The program

The program of L’Eden d’estate concerns the period from 14 June to 31 July. The second part of the program will be announced in the second half of July, from August 1st to September 8th.

The season kicks off with the blockbuster film in Italy, as well as the directorial debut of actress Paola Cortellesi, «There’s still tomorrow»immediately followed Saturday 15 June from «Ferrari»by Michael Mann, coinciding with the arrival of the Mille Miglia.

Among the most recent films that will light up the screen of the Viridarium Park is the poignant story of «Past Lives» by Celine Songthe anxiety-provoker «Anatomy of a fall» by Justine Triet, the award-winning «Poor creatures» by Yorgos Lanthimos and the shocking story of «May December» by Todd Haynes.

Among the Italian titles they will be present «I captain» by Matteo Garrone, «Palazzina Laf» by Michele Riondino and, for the first time, the comedy «Too blue» by Filippo Barbagallo.

Finally, there will be no shortage of lighter titles such as «The Fall Guy» by David Leitch and the highly anticipated «Challengers» by Luca Guadagnino.

In original language

The projection of Thursday will be dedicated to films in original language with subtitles, to meet the needs of the more cinephile public and tourists who will stay in Brescia in the summer months. On the calendar the public will find the comedy «Drive Away Dolls» by Ethan Coen, «One more summer» by Catherine Breillat e «Chien de la crate» by Jean-Baptiste Durand.

Among the restored classics, all presented in the original version with Italian subtitles, the program features great Hollywood classics such as “I will save you” (Spellbound) by Alfred Hitchcock with Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman e «Fourth Estate» (Citizen Kane) by Orson Welles, but it will also be possible to see the work of Japanese Yasujiro Ozu again «Trip to Tokyo»the Spanish «Kika – a body on loan» by Pedro Almòdovar and the French «Hatred» by Mathieu Kassovitz.

This summer’s special event will be the live soundtrack of Ernst Lubitsch’s masterpiece «The Flesh Doll» (Die Puppe, 1919), a hilarious and fast-paced comedy.

A jewel to be rediscovered, brought back to the big screen on Thursday 1 August at 9.15pm thanks to the live performance of two extraordinary musicians: Paolo Spaccamonti (guitar, synth) and Ramon Moro (trumpet, flugelhorn), who in addition to being composers of great value, have given life over the years to a relationship with the language of images that has led them to increasingly surprising and experimental results, placing them among the new international talents of cinematographic music, which increasingly intersects with sound design.

Meetings with critics

Also for summer 2024, the Brescia Musei Foundation is offering meetings with critics, journalists and professionals from the film sector and beyond: a series of events that will take place before the screenings at the Santa Giulia Auditorium, in via Piamarta 4 in Brescia. A moment of discussion, fun and training to discover oneself as increasingly aware and attentive spectators.

There are two in-depth analyzes proposed in the first part of the program and which will continue in August and September: Tuesday 2 July, from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm, before the screening of «Quarto Kane», the critic Roberto Manassero (FilmTv, MYmovies and Cineforum ) will lead us to discover the cinema of Orson Welles. On Tuesday 16 July, again from 7.00 pm, on the occasion of the screening of «Il cielo sopra Gerusalemme», the critic Andrea Chimento (IlSole24Ore.com, Cineforum, director of LongTake.it) will propose an in-depth analysis dedicated to the cinema of Wim Wenders.

Cinema-inspired museum visits

Fondazione Brescia Musei, alongside the proposal of L’Eden d’estate and the terrace in the Viridarium Park, offers, organized by the Educational Services, a series of guided tours and workshops, stimulating opportunities for in-depth study of the permanent collections and museum spaces. The time (5.30pm) is designed to allow you to combine the visits with an aperitif outside and then enjoy the screenings of Summer Eden.

The first meeting is scheduled for the opening of the season, when, in conjunction with the film “There’s Still Tomorrow”, at the Santa Giulia Museum the public will be able to take part in a journey inspired by The Long Walk of Women which tells the story of the female in Roman times. It continues on Tuesday 25 June when, in conjunction with the film «The Dreamers», an alternative visit is proposed among the secrets of the Tosio Martinengo Art Gallery, Discoveries, oddities and secrets. On Wednesday 3 July, combined with the film «The old oak», the visit moves to the Viridarium Park with mythical gardens; On Tuesday 9 July, combined with «I will save you», a Surrealist Practices workshop will be held at the Santa Giulia Museum, while on Wednesday 17 July the film «The sky burns» will offer the opportunity for a journey to discover the Sculpture Park : the Viridarium, the ancient garden of the Domus dell’Ortaglia, today a place that houses the collection of contemporary art installations acquired by the Brescia Musei Foundation. The Celestial Towers workshop, at the Castle of Brescia, closes the month of July with a walk around the Castle to discover its towers, in the wake of the inspiration of Anselm Kiefer’s Seven Heavenly Palaces, which will be combined with the film Anselm, on Wednesday 24 July.
