Montesilvano. Citizen mourning, in Montesilvano, after the death of a woman and her daughter which occurred yesterday afternoon along the railway tracks.
“As a sign of deep condolences, we will proclaim city mourning to express heartfelt participation in the pain of the families and acquaintances of the victims”, announces the mayor Ottavio De Martinis, who adds, “The sad and shocking news of the accident has led us to cancel the celebrations scheduled for tomorrow, June 14th.” Tonight, in fact, the party for the re-election of the mayor was scheduled.
The victims are a 40-year-old woman and her 9-year-old daughter, both residents of the Adriatic town, probably of South American origins: the dynamics of the accident are still being ascertained, but some witnesses would have seen them walking with a calm attitude, hand in hand and sit on a bench on the platform of platform 2 of the station, shortly before the Frecciarossa which left Pescara at 5.53pm and headed for Milan ran over them at high speed.
It therefore needs to be clarified how the tragedy occurred, without excluding a voluntary gesture on the part of the woman. It took the scientific police a few hours to reconstruct the dramatic scene, with the train stopping on the bridge that crosses the Saline, on the border with Città Sant’Angelo, several meters further north: it was impossible, in fact, for the driver , left in shock, avoid running over them. Among those who witnessed the scene, shocked in turn, the belief in the voluntariness of the gesture is widespread, as is the heartbreak at how it took place before their eyes.
The convoy remained stationary for a long time, slowing down the entire Adriatic line, and only in the evening was it possible to identify the two victims. The railway police of Pescara and Ancona will now reconstruct the details, with the fundamental contribution of the cameras present in the station.
