The woman, an English teacher in the primary school of Capranica and Ronciglione, was in the company of a 54-year-old colleague, Martina, resident in Ronciglione. They had decided to spend an afternoon on the Ladispola coast, a few meters from the precious naturalistic area of the swamp. A chat, books in the bag and then a swim braving the waves. The sea, in fact, was rough yesterday, very prohibitive in a very critical point. According to the story of some witnesses present on the beach, Maria Cesarea was quickly sucked in and then violently slammed onto the rocks by the force of the sea with gusts of up to 50 kilometers per hour. A westerly undertow that transported them in a few seconds to about twenty meters away even though they were a short distance from the shore. That was enough to suddenly suck them in, the teacher got stuck between the boulders. A blow to her neck would have been fatal, as reported by the first responders who intervened. Endless moments, with her friend in difficulty and at the mercy of the current but able to cling to a rock and stay there until the arrival of the “guardian angels”. The Dolphin civil protection volunteers who arrived at Torre Flavia and the members of the 26A team of the Cerenova fire brigade dived in and freed it from the anti-erosion barrier, but when there was nothing left to do, they rescued Martina who she had still managed to find safety on her own. The 118 staff did everything they could to resuscitate the teacher, unfortunately to no avail. The colleague was injured in the leg and, in shock, she was transported to the Aurelia Hospital: she was conscious and her condition was not serious.

Ronciglione is in mourning, where the victim – who everyone called Sara – was also known for organizing study trips with the kids to England during the summer. A point of reference for the entire community, yesterday the news spread quickly and left the town dismayed. An autopsy was not ordered, the dynamics appear rather clear: it was an accident. As established by the Coast Guard, directed by Commander Cristian Vitale, the Municipality has placed signs to indicate the danger of that portion of the beach. Precisely for this reason, from next weekend the Ladispoli municipal council, drawing on regional funds, will take action by positioning lifeguards with watchtowers in at least five stations on the free beaches between Ladispoli and Marina San Nicola and in Torre Flavia. For further support there will be rescue dogs, last year Labradors and golden retrievers proved decisive in saving human lives. However, residents and holidaymakers are asking for even greater security coverage.
