Cabras He’s from Sassari Matteo Sanna, owner of the pizzeria L’Era della Pizza in Li Punti, the pizza chef who is the overall champion of the “Pizza Mediterranea Cup”, the Sardinian stage of the World Pizza Championship. After the conference that characterized Tuesday, the actual competition took place yesterday in the multi-purpose center in via Tharros, which saw 35 pizza chefs from all over Sardinia competing in six different categories: classic pizza, pizza in pala, Neapolitan pizza, innovative contemporary pizza, gluten-free pizza and the new Pisarda entry, so called because it is obtained with grains from the local supply chain and stuffed with agri-food products from local companies.

Matteo Lai won in the classic pizza category, Marcello Melis in the pizza on the shovel category, Antonio Pellecchia in Neapolitan pizza, Paolo Paolillo in contemporary innovative pizza, Ivano Giuffrida in gluten-free pizza and cabrarese Rosy Circus in the pisarda, with a proposal based on Sinis melon and bottarga. The introduction of this last category was made possible by the production of a Sardinian soft wheat flour suitable for the preparation of pizzas by the Sardo Sole company of Enrico Lepori. A jury of experts, chaired by the starred chef Mamma Flavia, evaluated and tasted the various pizzas.

The overall winner Matteo Sanna and all the winners of the various categories obtained the pass to compete at the beginning of October in Pomezia, in the province of Rome, at the finals of the Pizza World Cup, which will award the world title. «The first one was good – commented the mayor Andrea Abis – despite the difficulties related to electrical faults, beyond our control. And many congratulations to our pizza chef, who will represent us in Pomezia.”

The creation of the Sardinian stage of the World Pizza Championship, strongly supported by the Gal del Sinis, aims to promote the gastronomic heritage of the area, its natural and cultural beauties, excellent products and sustainable tourism. The products of local companies in the rice, oil, wheat and wine supply chain were the protagonists of the two days with an exhibition in dedicated stands.

The “Pizza Mediterranea Cup” is promoted by the Aps “Ancient rural professions of Sinis”, in collaboration with the local Gal, the Mont’e Prama Foundation, the Municipality, Sinis Agricola, Sardo Sole and the cultivated and processed durum wheat supply chain in Sardinia, Molino 5 seasons, Pizza Style Folliero and Mondo Pizza Cauli.
