The important road artery had been closed for about 6 years, Mayor Franz Caruso: “Important day for our city”

During a sober but very heartfelt ceremony, which took place this morning, Mayor Franz Caruso returned Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the important road closed for about 6 years, to the use of residents and motorists.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele reopened this morning in Cosenza

“It is a particularly important day because an absolutely indispensable road artery for Cosenza Vecchia and the entire city is finally accessible again – said Franz Caruso – whose closure had penalized access to this important part of our urban territory. The reason for the closure of this stretch of road, as everyone knows, was due to a landslide which created extremely uncomfortable conditions and unfortunately also caused one victim. This morning, therefore, my first affectionate thought is for Gianpiero Tarasi, our young fellow citizen, and for his family in full and total respect for the wishes of his mother, who I had the honor of meeting and who I dutifully wanted to meet, in recent days, fully understanding his rigorous silence.”

“The intervention carried out, which made this area accessible again – continues Franz Caruso – is of great value because it involved the safety of the entire ridge and the restoration of the road, including the ex novo bituminisation of the entire upper part of Flatbed holder. It is part of a much larger programme, entirely aimed at mitigating the risk of landslides in the historic center and in the neighboring areas, also including the hamlets of Donnici, Borgo Partenope and Sant’Ippolito, for 6 million and 895 thousand euros. Works that are being carried out, which will put an end to a very distant event in time and which, above all, will secure vast areas of municipal territory repeatedly threatened over the years by continuous dangers of landslides and mudslides. The reopening of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, in particular, caused some unpredictable bureaucratic problems, which were possible to overcome thanks to the commitment of the competent councilors, the offices and, in particular, the new manager Salvatore Modesto who showed great attachment to the position held and to the city. In this regard, albeit without any polemical streak, I think it appropriate to highlight the inconsistency of those who, then city administrators, had the duty to intervene immediately and did not do so, allowing approximately three years to pass in vain, while today they have attempted to exploit the delay a few weeks. In reality, the reopening of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, together with the entire seismic risk mitigation project in the historic centre, which is a long-standing problem, has been a great concern of mine which I have started working on since I took office, recovering the financing that was wasted in order to subsequently and quickly implement every action and procedure that led us to the reopening of the artery today”.

“I am satisfied and happy – concluded the mayor Franz Caruso – because I have used all my energies to achieve this result which, on a daily basis, for more than two and a half years, have always been at the constant and continuous service of my city and its my fellow citizens, punctually maintaining all the commitments I had undertaken with them”.
