“2023, according to experts, was characterized by being the year with one of the most serious droughts of the last centuries. Drought and water shortages are problems that are severely affecting Italy. An emergency that in the first half of this year has mainly affected the South. Our Region is not exempt from the drought and water shortage emergency. In fact, many people are arguing and asking that the Calabrian regional government should start a discussion and the implementation of a detailed plan to combat drought and water shortages as soon as possible, which will allow us to look to the future with optimism.
“Unfinished dams, the Region must intervene”
“It is necessary to intervene urgently, now, – specifies the union – with measures that can bring immediate relief. We of Fillea Cgil Calabria, although we are convinced that the battle against drought and water shortages must be fought on multiple fronts, believe that a good response could come with the completion and start-up of existing reservoirs, thus avoiding leaving unfinished works. A new water system for the entire Calabrian territory, over 50% of the water is lost along the way and does not reach its destination. A choice that would not only provide effective help in combating drought and the resulting water shortage, but would also contribute to creating thousands of jobs. Therefore, we hope that the Regional Council in the next sessions will begin to talk about the “historic” unfinished dams present in our Region such as the Esaro Dam and the Re Sole Dam in the province of Cosenza, the Melito Dam in the province of Catanzaro and the Metrano Dam in the province of Reggio Calabria.
