Aterp Crotone housing degraded, street art alone is not enough: the Council should take care of it

CROTONE – We first raised the problem when we saw the Aterp buildings chosen for the creation of the murals of the Kriu urban redevelopment project. A beautiful initiative to create works of art on the walls of those buildings which however require immediate maintenance given the conditions of structural degradation in which they find themselves for decades of lack of maintenance by Aterp. “Precious jewels on torn clothes had defined the murals by a woman” who lives in one of the Aterp accommodations. A problem which, however, has been overcome by the social controversy over the subjects depicted in the murals.
The political group Movimentando, founded a few months ago by Giuseppe Trocino, Andrea Correggia, Andrea Menzano, Davide Monte, Fabrizio Barbieri, Fabrizio Pulvirenti and Noemi Bossi, returned with a note to the conditions of the Aterp buildings in Crotone.
Movimentando’s criticism is for everyone: “The initiative of the municipal administration of Crotone to redevelop some popular buildings through street art has generated controversy from some members of the minority in the city council regarding the subject depicted by some murals. We would have expected the start of a public debate on the rain of money arrived with the PNRR for sports facilities in the face of cosmic nothingness for public housing: old buildings, worn out by time and humidity”.

Addressing the municipal administration (which however has no responsibility for Aterp buildings), Movimentando polemically writes: “Maybe it is more useful to have 3 public swimming pools than dignified and safe homes? This carelessness, in our humble opinion, forces many families to live in precarious conditions, worsening the quality of life and housing safety of the urban fabric”.
Instead, it rightly addresses the problem of the assignment of public housing to the Municipality: “There are no updates and/or publications of new rankings for the assignment of public housing with the real risk of little transparency in administrative management” writes the political movement.

Movimentando’s request is to deal with the things that matter and for this reason the criticism is not an end in itself, but proposes: “Aside from the brawls on social media and in the press, we hope that these issues will be addressed in the City Council, in incipit of the administration or of the minority councilors also in order to avoid that public housing is assigned to the poor and that the poor citizens find themselves abandoned in the jungle of illegal occupations where the law of “the strongest” prevails. It would be a good start to launch an evaluation phase in order to quantify the housing need and structure adequate responses. We could, for example, involve private individuals who own empty buildings to evaluate a public-private partnership and develop new strategies to combat the housing emergency by intercepting European funds intended for these purposes”.
