The disaster on the streets of Reggio Calabria and the denunciation

“The foothill roads Of Reggio Calabria they represent a vital artery for connecting local communities and for the city’s economy. Citizens have been waiting for years for complete resurfacing of the road surface. Unfortunately, to date, not only the condition of the asphalt leaves much to be desired, but also and above all the care of the roads: if major investments are necessary for the asphalt which the municipal coffers (perhaps) cannot support, preferring interventions in other areas of the city, we don’t understand why ordinary maintenance isn’t even carried out through the in-house company Castore Spl”. Thus begins the note Demetrius GiordanoGeneral Secretary of the PRI (Italian Republican Party) of Reggio Calabria.

“Reading on the Castore website, in fact, among the relevant services the company must respond for: (1) ordinary maintenance of road axes; (2) ordinary maintenance of pedestrian areas and cycle paths; (3) cleaning of roadsides and drains in the municipality of Reggio Calabria. Even though it is now late in the season, the clearing of the grass has not yet been carried out, leaving these suburbs abandoned to themselves and becoming difficult to navigate in some sections, both by car and on foot.”

The photos (supplied) speak for themselves: the San Salvatore – Cataforio road, an already tortuous artery, does not have a single clean ditch; between Vinco and Pavigliana the road is bare bones, with a narrow roadway where there is rubbish and aggressively grown vegetation; in Cannavò and Riparo Vecchio the pedestrian path is no longer passable for the same reasons; in Sala and Mosorrofa landslides and mudslides have narrowed the travel routes and created new vegetation. And this only for the former 12th district…”.

Nothing has been done yet: “due to lack of interest or lack of communication?”

“Although our reports and those of the citizens (also represented through neighborhood committees) were delivered to the appropriate addresses and offices, nothing has been done yet. We ask ourselves, at this point, how these notices are managed by the URP and the municipal delegations present in the territories. Has Castore ever received reports from citizens? Are interventions not made due to disinterest or lack of communication?asks Giordano. “It is therefore not surprising if the citizens of the numerous peripheral areas continue to perceive the absence of the commitments made by the administration to keep the only roads connecting to the city decent and usable”.

“Explaining here the importance of the maintenance of the foothill roads of Reggio Calabria, with particular regard to the cleaning of ditches, manholes and the removal of landslides, should be superficial, but for the Municipality it seems not to be so obvious. It is a fundamental prevention activity that protects road infrastructure and ensures the safety of road users, a necessary investment for the protection of public assets and for the continuity of the daily activities of local communities. With the utmost institutional respect we will once again report the state of abandonment of these arteries with the promise that, if not even the ordinary is taken care of, we will promote sensational actions with the citizens concerned”Giordano’s note ends.
