Metalworkers; Palombella (Uilm): “Caserta symbol of the economic, industrial and social degradation caused by failed policies in a territory that has great potential”

“Today we express all our anger towards the national and local institutions that have made Campania the second poorest region in Italy and Caserta among the most neglected cities in the South. From being a land of work, Caserta has become a land of economic degradation, industrial, social and large-scale speculation. Until the 1990s it was considered the Brianza of the South, but today it is unfortunately increasingly distant from the rest of Italy and Europe”. Thus the General Secretary Uilm, Rocco Palombella.

“Until a few years ago – he explains – there were 4 thousand workers employed in companies such as Ericson, Siemens, Marconi and Olivetti. Today the current Jabil has been reduced from 1,300 to 420 people, to which are added Soft Lab and Orefice which employ 250. We have gone from 4 thousand to 700 workers. A disaster! In Jabil, present in the area for a fifth of a century, we say that he cannot free himself so easily. We will not make transfer agreements to other companies. Jabil must remain in Caserta and continue to assume its social and industrial responsibilities.”

“We do not agree – adds the Uilm leader – with failed reindustrialization projects that favor the industrial impoverishment of the territory and then pass the failure onto people’s skin, as happened with Soft lab and Orefice. People are not commodities. For starters, Soft Lab must respect its commitments and start paying salaries and arrears to its workers.”

“To safeguard our industrial system – urges Palombella – we must preserve strategic sectors such as steel, household appliances, automotive, electronics, aerospace and railways. We are tired of seeing workers forced to move from one group to another with the sole aim of companies taking incentives. We need a serious national and regional industrial policy with ambitious and concrete choices for this Province. Caserta must be identified among the most important cities in Italy for investments related to microelectronics and the components necessary to manage the ecological and digital transition, because it has all the skills”.

“The other sectors – says the trade unionist – such as the automotive, household appliances, steel and railway industries are also suffering. In 2015 we sacrificed the Carinaro and Teverola plants. From Beko we expect confirmation of the Logistics Hub and from the Seri Group an effective take-off of the reindustrialization plan with the launch of Teverola 2 which could give an important employment boost to the area. Without answers – concludes Palombella – we will continue to mobilize, fight and make our voice heard until we see the changes necessary to give new impetus to our manufacturing industries made”.
