We will most likely know on June 13th – three days after the start of the counting operations which began on Monday at 2pm – the outcome of the voting to elect the new mayor of Lecce. Also on 12 June, starting from 4pm, the electoral commission’s checks continued to ascertain and resolve the inconsistencies in the numbers found in four electoral sections (25, 26, 35 and 88), which could decide the challenge between the outgoing mayor Carlo Salvemini and the challenger Adriana Poli Bortone: the possible election of Poli Bortone in the first round or the run-off, in fact, will be decided by only a few votes.

The official data on the preferences of the people of Lecce are partial (98 sections out of 102), awaiting those that will emerge from the four sections that have come under the microscope and which will only be made official at the end of the commission’s checks. At the moment, the candidate for the centre-right Poli Bortone is ahead of the candidate for the centre-left Salvemini: 49.64 percent against the round 47, with a gap of 1,319 votes. But there are still almost 2,200 at stake. The first section under examination, 25, was closed at 10.30pm on Tuesday; on June 12th it was the turn of the sections 26 and 35, whose verification operations concluded late in the evening. Today it will be the turn of 88, therefore the official verdict which, awaited for days by the whole city, could mark a new political page for Lecce or postpone everything to the second round which will take place on 23 and 24 June.

Poli Bortone but he rejoices: «Salvemini was rejected by the voters and there is a new majority in the city». Salvemini he replies: «Currently there are no differences compared to the data that we had promptly collected and inserted into our data room».
