Pisa, 13 June 2024 – Un breakdown static of beam wooden roof located on the central arch of the Porta Nuova walls of Pisawhich overlooks right on square of Miracles. This is what happened yesterday morning around 9. After a report from the municipal police and the intervention of the firefighters, the area was cordoned off, effectively closing the three access gates to the square, which is busy these days assaulted by tourists. The measure was taken as a precaution and the arches giving access to the famous square were cordoned off, as was pedestrian traffic, which was directed to other accesses. In addition to the municipal police, the Superintendency of Fine Arts was also present on site. The problem concerns one of the beams that support the roof, which has visibly partially detached.
At the entrance, however, the outermost gate was opened a few meters from the door. “One of our public works technicians – explained councilor Raffaele Latrofa – went to do the checks. Tomorrow (today ed) scaffolding will be erected to be able to make more accurate assessments. What appears at first glance is that this is a previous situation that does not cause any alarm. In any case – adds the councilor for public works – after the technical evaluation we will understand whether it is structural damage or not. In this case the barriers will be removed, otherwise we will immediately evaluate the interventions to be carried out”. The door was opened in the pre-existing medieval walls by the then Duke of Florence Cosimo I de’ Medici in 1562 and is known as Nuova as it is more recent than to the original Porta del Leone and Porta Santa Maria as the entrance to the Piazza del Duomo.
