On the path marked by the redefinition of designations of origin – the so-called Abruzzo Model which modified the wine regulations in the direction of simplification and territorial valorisation – the public hearing for the cancellation of the eight current PGIs was held in Pescara.
A fundamental formal step in view of the creation of the only protected geographical indication that Abruzzo will have from the next harvest, which adds to the recent introduction of the Superiore mention for PDOs and the four new provincial appellations aimed at strengthening the PDOs and the brand “d’Abruzzo” which will include all the wines produced in the region.
In the headquarters of the former Aurum, in the presence of representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, the Abruzzo Region and the National Committee for Dop and Igp wines, dozens of wine operators who produce Igp took part in the Colline Pescaresi, Colline Teatine, Frentane Hills, Aprutini Hills, Sangro Hills, Terre di Chieti and Terre Aquilane.

The territory of the eight PGIs will be represented by a single large regional indication, Terre d’Abruzzo PGI.
The recognition of the Superiore mention in the DOC, meanwhile, already allows us to highlight on the label the reference to smaller and more identifying territories such as the provincial ones and, in the future, even more restricted ones such as the so-called “crus”, the municipal Additional Geographical Units, right down to the single mention of “vineyard”.
“Today’s discussion, which comes after a necessary process started in 2018 – says the president of the Consortium for the protection of Abruzzo wines, Alessandro Nicodemi – was calm and constructive and only registered one objection in the context of a only PGI, Terre dell’Aquila, of which the Ministry has taken note.

We need to have a collective vision and to take a step forward together, it is often necessary for everyone to take one step back. For this reason, I invite everyone to think in terms of Abruzzo’s ‘value'”.
