Italian Left: The city of Catania transformed into public landfills

In the city of Catania, separate waste collection has been organized for some years. The prerequisite for a successful collection is the behavior of citizens, who must

not commit to dividing the waste produced with expert precision, but above all the efficient organization of collection by the municipality of Catania and the company contracting the service, which must guarantee the certainty and timeliness of the collection of separated waste.

In the city of Catania, separate waste collection becomes a mirage to the extent that those in charge of collection delay or, even worse, do not serve entire neighborhoods, transforming the piles of waste into nauseating landfills.

The Viale della Regione area has in fact been transformed into a large and widespread open-air landfill, with all the risks that this entails due to the high summer temperatures.

Viale della Regione is the main road connecting to the cemetery and various schools, very popular with the city’s children.

It is scandalous to transform it into an open-air landfill, inundating thousands of families with nauseating odors, with serious health risks worthy of the third world.

Furthermore, delays in collection make citizens’ waste separation work useless and cause an unjustified increase in the waste tax, because the piles are considered residual waste, which goes to landfill at its weight in gold.

The inertia of the Trantino administration is unacceptable: the municipality of Catania cannot stand by and watch inertly.

There is an urgent need for immediate intervention at the company that carries out the service so that all the waste that poor collection has accumulated in the Viale della Regione area is immediately removed, so that the tender specifications are respected which, like the rest of the city, requires precise days for the collection of various differentiated waste (organic, paper, plastic, glass and residual).

We ask the mayor for immediate intervention and more punctual and careful control so that the obligations of the contracting companies are respected, improving the quality of the service, lowering the waste tax and making all the neighborhoods of the city cleaner.

The provincial secretary Giolì Vindigni and the municipal secretary Marcello Failla
