The Prato yellow flames have focused attention on a phenomenon that has recently emerged in the local context of reference, namely the illicit importation of “gutka”. It’s about chewing tobacco particularly widespread in India and Pakistan, which, generally, as explained by the Gdf, is mixed with other products (including carcinogenic) during preparation and used due to the stimulating effects produced on the human organism, which makes it particularly attractive to workers employed in strenuous and prolonged tasks.

Precisely because of the harmful effects it causes, “gutka” has also been declared harmful and highly dangerous to health by the Indian government authorities, who recently banned its marketing because, in addition to creating addiction, it would be responsible for serious diseases, such as throat, lung and mouth cancer.

In this context, on the basis of the operational directives of the Provincial Command of Prato, the PEF Unit of Prato has developed a series of information elements acquired in the context of the economic control of the territory which, together with an in-depth consultation of the databases and a investigative activities, have made it possible to identify the supply channel used for the illicit importation of “gutka” also in the province of Prato.

As part of the aforementioned monitoring, it was a package was found in storage at a logistics warehouse in Prato, inside which they were discovered numerous yellow packets containing “gutka”, for a total weight equal to 20 kilograms.

The aforementioned substance was subjected to seizure for the violation of the Consolidated Law on Customs Laws e the recipient of the shipment was referred to the local judicial authority.
