Cremona Sera – When there was the Supercinema (and before that the Moretto and the Reale). The failure of the Media Library idea

Still the memory of an old cinema hall. It was the Supercinema between via Goito and via Palestro. The room built in 1938 based on a design by the industrial expert Guido Tarsetti on the occasion of the reform of another existing cinema on the site, called Cinema Reale-Moretto. The access to the latter was on via Goito and was managed by Giovanni Donzelli. Then in 1937 the place was purchased by Renzo Cavalleri and demolished to make room for the new and luxurious cinema: the Supercinema designed by Tarsetti and built by the Cremonese company Guido Carminati.

The Supercinema has long been a premier place to see current films on the big screen. The audience was huge, the gallery was also large (very discreet and an ideal place for exchanging effusions during the screening of the film) it was the largest hall in Cremona. All the great films from the fifties and sixties have passed through there. The great westerns are not to be missed.

It was May 4, 2001 when the building that housed the Supercinema was sold under concession to the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities for a period of 99 years. An area has been identified, the one between via Palestro and via Goito not far from the Government Library, of approximately 870 m2. Through a partnership with the Municipality of Cremona and the municipal company AEM, the former Supercinema building was purchased. In 2001, the AemService company took over the company that owned the former Supercinema and accompanied the administrative and planning process that would lead to the signing of the agreement between the Municipality of Cremona and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the related building permit.

The project intervention was estimated at four million euros. But the imponderable happens: on February 24, 2004, during the demolition works of the former Supercinema, in the adjacent Palazzo Ugolani Aschieri, one of the oldest buildings in Cremona, large cracks opened with the detachment of portions of the walls spread throughout the entire building. ‘building. The works were immediately suspended and from that moment a long legal case began which led to the cancellation of the media library project and the financing of the restoration and consolidation of Palazzo Ugolani Aschieri at the expense of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. In fact, the engineer’s expertise. Sandro Mossi, on behalf of the Court of Brescia, highlighted that the works commissioned by the Ministry were not carried out as foreseen in the project wanted by the Municipality of Cremona, and the Ministry was therefore held responsible for the damage.

In 2009, an agreement was stipulated between the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the owners of Palazzo Ugolani Aschieri for the consolidation of the building, works which only began in 2014. The interventions concerned the consolidation of the load-bearing walls of Palazzo Ugolani Aschieri, the consolidation of the vaults , of the stairs, the structural connection of the floors, and an important steel lattice structure supporting the southern perimeter wall of Palazzo Ugolani Aschieri, which appears very clearly towards the widening of via Goito. In 2017 the municipal council decided to intervene with the removal of the existing palisade and the steel scaffolding, the chipping and re-plastering of the west wall, the restoration of part of the flooring inside the area (250 m2), the restoration , following demolition of the damaged parts, of the entire sidewalk adjacent to the area and overlooking Via Goito and Palestro, as well as the construction of a lighting system. The intention is to create a public space that allows people to stop and meet, with minimal and temporary facilities awaiting a definitive arrangement. In 2019 the square was named after Mario Coppetti: a meeting place, with smart benches, gazebos, shaded spots and a cinema-themed mural as a backdrop, according to the intentions of the municipal administration. Unfortunately the result is there for all to see.

Unfortunately, no more cinema or media library but an anonymous open space (named after the sculptor and patriot Mario Coppetti) and the memory of old films.
