Rome, 12 June 2024 – As part of the celebrations of World Refugee Day, the Badia Grande social cooperative organized a unique and engaging event. This is a tournament “human table football”, and the participants are young migrants. The first races were held yesterday afternoon in Piazza della Vittoria, just outside Porta Nuova.

The tournament sees the participation of eight teams. Each is made up of eight “footballers” from the Msna Bonagia, Mappamondo and Salemi centres. As well as from the Sai centers of Valderice, Alcamo, Marsala, Buseto Palazzolo and Paceco. The players, young migrants aged between 16 and 26, representing a variety of nationalities, including Bangladesh, Ivory Coast, Afghanistan, Tunisia, Egypt, Somalia and Morocco. These athletes are all guests of the reception centers for adults (SAI) and for unaccompanied foreign minors (MSNA) managed by Badia Grande in the province of Trapani.

After the first four matches played in Marsala, in the space next to the Cine Teatro Impero, the teams Msna Salemi, Sai Alcamo and Msna Bonagia are at the top of the provisional rankings. The second day of the tournament will be held tomorrow in Valderice (TP) and the third on Friday in Custonaci (TP). The semi-finals and final will be played on Saturday. Immediately afterwards, residents of the town of Trapani and migrants will share the emotions of football with the event “At the European Championships we cheer together”. It will be a moment of aggregation, socialization and integration with the live screening of the Italy-Albania match. Finally, there will be live music with ForeWay.

In addition to the human table football tournament, Badia Grande has organized numerous other initiatives to promote integration. Between these, storytelling workshops, testimonies, debates, meetings, dance performances, live music and moments of conviviality. Next Sunday, in Alcamo, the guests of the reception centers will participate in the “Mediterranean of Peace” event, a multi-ethnic table in the streets of the historic center. On June 21st, at the San Pietro Monumental Complex in Marsala, a cultural event will be held on the theme “Every story deserves to be heard”. The final event will be held on June 28th in Alcamo, with the screening of the medium film “Under the same sky – We have the right to a happy life”, written and directed by Carlo Palmeri.
