Last weekend, in consideration of the holidays linked to the celebrations of June 2nd and in general in view of the approach of the summer season, the Modica Police Station intensified checks on people, vehicles and entertainment venues in the city of the County and along the seaside coast.

In the Modica area, patrols made up of police cars and motorbikes and specialized police were deployed to combat drug dealing.

In particular, the anti-drug checks concerned the streets of the historic centre, such as via Grimaldi, via Castello and Corso Umberto: in this context, two pushers (drug dealers) – Italians, in their early twenties, with no criminal record – were reported for detention for the purposes of of drug dealing and seized – after specific searches – a total of 20 grams of hashish divided into single doses of 1 gram, 2 precision scales and several hundred euros in small denomination banknotes.

A twenty-five year old from Modica, who was stationed near these streets, was reported to the Prefecture as a drug user.

Also over the weekend, a 49-year-old man was reported for unjustified possession of a switchblade, another (resident of Scicli) was reported to the Prosecutor’s Office for failure to keep a weapon with the simultaneous withdrawal of the same, while two foreigners were referred for resisting a public official and in one of these cases the Volante officers used the Taser supplied in order to contain their harassing and aggressive actions towards the officers involved.

The checks also concerned the regular carrying out of the entertainment activities located in the seaside village of Marina di Modica: 4 catering and recreational activities were subjected to administrative checks.

In the circumstance, a dance evening was found to be in breach of the required authorizations for dance shows and for this reason the organizer was reported to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Ragusa.

Over the weekend alone, 430 people were identified, 140 vehicles were checked and 5 administrative charges were issued for violations of the Highway Code.
