With the election of Bonaccini to the European Parliament, the race for the new presidency of the Emilia-Romagna region opens. The next elections could come in a few months. Three months to call a new vote, two months to set the date. The elections in Emilia-Romagna for the new President of the Region could take place in 5 months, given the imminent resignation of Stefano Bonaccini, elected to the European Parliament. This was decided by the Legislative Assembly, which voted for an amendment to the 2014 electoral law which establishes the times for calling voters to vote after the governor’s farewell. According to the old provision, the vote should have been held between April and June of next year. A period of almost a year, which the majority judged to be too long, therefore taking action. A move that the opposition, however, did not welcome. “We are in favor of voting as soon as possible, but we are voting against the amendment given that we have not been given time to investigate further,” underlines Marta Evangelisti (Fdi). Simone Pelloni (Civic Network) is also harsh, warning that “President Bonaccini decided when the legislature ended, the majority decides when we vote: it’s a shame that the electoral law should be the theme of the Assembly, therefore a unitary theme”. “It is just a technical modification of an electoral law that we all voted unanimously together, we work seriously”, replies Marcella Zappaterra (Pd) whose intervention is based on the constitutional principle according to which elections must be held in shortest time possible. In short, all things considered, the vote for the new president could arrive as early as November, or in any case by the end of the year. The race for nominations for the post-Bonaccini position will therefore come alive in the next few weeks. There are several names floating around the centre-left while the centre-right team has so far been more reserved in its proposals. What is certain is that, given the times, we will have to act quickly.
