“Chinese cars in Mirafiori”, this is how Turin takes to the streets (again) for the former Fiat – Turin News

Turin is mobilizing again for Mirafiori. And now she’s fine with them arriving the Chinese of Leapmotor, as long as the survival of the factory is guaranteed. Chinese that, according to the unions, Stellantis would like to place somewhat surprisingly in France, where the Group is also reducing activity in several factories.

The new event will be Wednesday 12 June, exactly two months after the united strike in April, with an eight-hour protest, from 9am to 5pm, which will see the participation of delegates and workers in front of Palazzo di Città. It will be set up a stage from which automotive industry experts, delegates and trade unionists will speak. Among the guests will be the mayor Stefano Lo Russo, the governor of Piedmont Alberto Cirio and representatives of the Curia. The event will be enriched by DJ set music and the distribution of water and sandwiches.

“The assignment of the production of 500 hybrid is certainly a significant step, but not enough for the relaunch of Mirafiori. We ask for another model, not just a different engine. We also want to focus on the future of the employees, many of whom will speak on Wednesday. New hires are also necessary”, declared Edi Lazzi, general secretary of the Turin Fiom. “We have a project for Turin and we will continue to support it. We want more for related industries and a generational change. The 500 hybrid is a guarantee, but our project is broader. We have achieved a result, but it is not enough”, reiterated Luigi Paone, general secretary of the Turin Uilm.

“In continuity with the demonstration of 12 April, when the automotive strike was proclaimed, we intend to maintain high attention on the sector and on Turin. The dispute linked to car production represents a fundamental element of our economy. We have chosen a different to involve the whole city, directly addressing the problems”, added Rocco Cutrì, number one of the Turin Fim.

“The Turin metalworking unions are right to press Stellantis and the local authorities: the so-called hybrid 500 is a way to save time, but we don’t yet know how much it will reduce the use of redundancy payments, everything will depend on production volumes. It is essential to insist on obtaining new products and new producers”, stated Giorgio Airaudo, general secretary of the CGIL Piemonte. “It is no secret that, based on the tariff regime that Europe will decide to implement or not – observed Airaudo – Stellantis is considering moving production of its C- and D-segment Leapmotor models to France. Turin and Italy should apply to host one of these segments. During the day of the 12th it is also appropriate to press the government on Chinese producers interested in entering the European and Italian markets. Cirio and Lo Russo must take advantage of the time gained, but they must guarantee greater safety to the territory, and this can only happen through new products and additional producers”.
