«In the southern vote the government area is in the minority. The battle against differentiated autonomy and against the blocking of cohesion funds, the weight of the area of social suffering, the youth vote, have sent a strong signal on a national level. The battle for the protection of the South continues with greater strength.” The president of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, wrote it on social media, commenting on the results of the European elections. Vincenzo De Luca stayed away as much as possible from the competition for the European Championships. His vote was also discreet (Saturday at the opening of the polls without a photographer in tow). But to quote one of his fellow citizens (Rocco Hunt), it is not good morning for the governor. From the Nazarene comes a clear and strong indication from this electoral round: De Luca can say goodbye to the third mandate. Whether he accepts it, however, is another matter: he is already working on two hypotheses and is ready to run alone. But let’s go to the numbers.

Voting in the province

In the Salerno area, the De Luca-Cirielli derby is won by the Melonian deputy minister. Fratelli d’Italia stands at 27.4 percent, while the Democratic Party (which is the leading party in all of Campania) is at 21.4 percent. The most voted is Giorgia Meloni with 50,710 preferences, followed by Alberico Gambino (33,685) who played at home as the former mayor of Cava dei Tirreni. In the dem ranks, however, it is Sarnese Lucia Annunziata the first with 29,625 votes, followed by Lello Topo (22,188) and Antonio Decaro (14,976).

In the city

In the city of Salerno the situation is reversed, but for De Luca it isn’t any better: because the winners among the Dems are the two candidates closest to the secretary Elly Schlein, his internal opponent. The data therefore: the Pd is at 27.2 percent, FdI stops at 19.8 percent. Annunziata stands in first place with 5890 preferences, followed by Sandro Ruotolo 2107, Lello Tepo (1905) and Antonio Decaro (1856). In Cirielli Meloni’s party he has 5410 (therefore under Annunziata) and Gambino 1335.

What De Luca will do

Now everyone is waiting for the governor’s first statements. However, as we were saying, he will continue with the idea of running for a third term. Two possible models at stake. The Veneto one, already used by my colleague Zaia: that is, the national law on the two-term limit is implemented and therefore the electoral hands start again from zero. There is also, however, the parliamentary system used in Valle D’Aosta: that is, changing the electoral law and getting elected to the regional council. Very risky but dispute-proof.
